Sample SOP Paragraph (Before vs After)
"I have always been interested in computer science. I want to do a PhD in AI because I like technology. I think I would be a good fit for your program."
Issues: Vague, generic, no research focus, no evidence, no program fit.
"My undergraduate research on optimizing neural networks for medical image classification revealed the transformative potential of AI in healthcare. I am particularly interested in developing interpretable AI models for clinical decision support — an area where Dr. Smith's work on explainable AI at your department has made significant contributions."
Strengths: Specific research focus, evidence of experience, faculty mention, demonstrates fit.
